From Cadence to Temporal: Evolving System Reliability at Scale
Date & Time: Tuesday, 18th November 2025 at 19.00 - 21.00 (GMT+7)
Location : Grab Hanoi HQ - PVI Building, 1 Pham Van Bach, Cau Giay, Hanoi

About the event
- High-Performance Back-end with IO Multiplexing
Minh Vu (Lead Software Engineer) will unpack event-driven programming and how the Linux kernel handles I/O at scale. We’ll explore non-blocking I/O, multiplexing techniques, and patterns that help back-end services manage thousands of connections efficiently—plus practical takeaways you can apply to your own systems. - Pioneering System Reliability with Temporal: Follow our journey evolving from Cadence to Temporal. Phuong Nguyen, Senior SRE, will share the real-world, non-Day Zero challenges of running this mission-critical workflow platform at Grab's scale. Learn how we leverage Temporal to build the next generation of fail-proof applications.

Topic:Event-Driven Back-end at Scale:
IO Multiplexing in the Linux Kernel
Minh joined Grab in November 2024 and focuses on building high-performance back-end platforms and internal developer tooling used across thousands of services. In this session, he’ll unpack how the Linux kernel handles I/O and how event-driven, non-blocking patterns enable services to manage thousands of concurrent connections efficiently—cutting latency and boosting throughput. With 13 years of hands-on engineering experience, Minh has tackled complex system challenges across domains and understands the weight of operating at scale. What excites him most at Grab is the engineering rigour and design-first mindset, where solutions are built to empower developers, accelerate velocity, and minimise operational risk.

Thrilled to share how our scalable solutions accelerate development velocity, learning daily from world-class engineers.

Temporal at Scale:
Evolving from Cadence to Fail-Proof Workflows at Grab
Phuong is a Senior Site Reliability Engineer at Grab, focusing on scalability, stability, and usability for the Temporal platform. He tackles some of the toughest technical challenges—from root cause analysis of workflow corruption to debugging complex monitoring stack migrations—and actively contributes to upstream open-source projects like Temporal and DataDog. Starting his career as a system engineer before moving into SRE, Phuong has built a reputation for solving problems at scale and improving developer experience through practical, impactful software solutions.

I'm eager to share our journey: mastering Temporal's advanced challenges to build truly fail-proof applications at scale.
