The very first day
Day One
Life is an endless series of firsts – or at least it should be. First step, first time riding a bicycle, first love. All of them change you in some way, make your life richer, worth living. So you’d expect me to remember vividly my first day at Grab.
But I can’t. Not exactly.
I was in a new job, in a new city, in a new part of the world, so I think in a way the details of that period of my life have all melted together into an intangible feeling of excitement and optimism – which is not a bad way to approach a new job!
But there are a few things that have stuck with me from that day – feelings rather than hard facts – a sense that I’d landed in the right place with the right people. They’re feelings that have stayed with me through my career at Grab so far – things that I hope I’ve passed on to those who have worked with me since that day.
Trust and empowerment.
I don’t know if I can fully explain how important those two feelings were at the time – and continue to be. There’s a sense that as your career progresses and you rise up the ladder those two things should be baked in. That yes, of course you’re trusted to do your job, to make the right decisions. And yes, you are empowered to turn those decisions into actions – otherwise how can you actually do your job?
But they were there from day one. It was never a question of the company wondering whether they’d made the right hire – they knew they had. And I don’t mean that in a boastful way, I mean that they’d not only realised that I was the right fit for Grab, but that Grab was the right fit for me.
It still is.
It’s something that I know every member of my team feels, and with good reason. We talk about this idea that it’s not about work/life balance but it’s about your whole life. Those two things filter down through your entire life – you’re not second guessing yourself at work and so you’re more relaxed at play. You might agonise over decisions that have to be taken, but when you know you’re surrounded by brilliant people whose opinions you trust, it makes taking those decisions that little bit easier.
So, if you’re sitting somewhere reading this blog and wondering if Grab is the right place for you, I can tell you that it is.
Trust me.
